What Constitutes a Mental Health Crisis or Psychiatric Emergency:

A psychiatric emergency is a sudden disturbance or change in a person’s thoughts, behavior, or mood that poses an immediate risk of harm to themselves or others, requiring immediate intervention that is beyond what routine services provide. Signs that this may be occurring are thoughts or statements of wanting to harm themselves or someone else with a plan or intent, extreme agitation, violent behavior, substance-induced crisis, or a noticeable inability to function, requiring immediate intervention or urgent care to ensure safety and prevent deterioration. It is highly recommended that you take immediate actions.

What to Do:

  • Prioritize safety of the individual and those around them.

  • Seek Immediate Help: Call 911, 988, or go to the nearest emergency room

  • Provide Information: Clearly state that it is a mental health crisis.

  • Rule out Medical Causes: A medical evaluation is essential because physical symptoms can mimic psychiatric symptoms. Medications or illicit substances can cause physical symptoms as well.
